Welcome to Low Risk Maternity Care

At Low Risk Maternity Care, we are a group of family physicians and midwives committed to providing exceptional care for women throughout their maternity journey. Our clinic was founded with a passion for women's health and a deep desire to offer compassionate, personalized support. We focus on empowering each woman with the knowledge and care she needs to feel confident and supported during this important time.

Family physicians are general family practice medical doctors with a special interest in maternity care. Our family doctors can assist you if you need a test or care for a complication or a condition unrelated to your pregnancy.

Midwives have a bachelor's degree in midwifery. They can write prescriptions for commonly used medications in pregnancy and can also provide you with information regarding natural treatments. Some patients will also be offered post partum home visits (see below for further information), where the patient can be assessed in the comfort of their own home. It is important to note that midwives working with our clinic will not be able to offer certain aspects of traditional midwifery care, such as out of hospital births, waterbirths, and guaranteed home visits.

All of our patients will be delivered on the fifth floor of Foothills Medical Centre located at 1403 29 St NW, Calgary, Alberta.

New LRMC Postpartum Home Visit Pilot Program

Our doctor/midwife team is developing an option for postpartum care at home. Once this is running, some patients may be able to go home early (within a few hours of delivery), if they want. Home visits will be based on need and capacity as the program grows. Please talk with your care provider if this interests you.

Routine post partum care will remain at the hospital. This is usually about 24 hours in hospital after a vaginal birth, 48 hours after a cesarean section. The Public Health Nurse arranges to see you within a few days, usually at their office. Then, you and your baby are usually seen at Low Risk Maternity Care 5-10 days after leaving the hospital.

LRMC provides the same breastfeeding support and other postpartum care in collaboration with your family doctor whether you are seen in clinic or at home.

We hope that this program will provide more patient choice and satisfaction. Thank you for understanding that we may not be able to accommodate everyone’s first choice. We will certainly try!

Why Choose Us?

At Low Risk Maternity Care, we offer families a supportive and empowering birth experience at Foothills Medical Centre. We believe in giving families the freedom to choose the timing of their birth, including options for a planned cesarean, planned induction of labor, or methods to promote spontaneous labor. We provide comprehensive support for unmedicated labor, along with access to an in-house anesthetist, 1:1 nursing support, and the option for up to two additional support people of your choice. If you have a doula as part of your care team, they are always welcome to join.

Each labor room is designed with your comfort in mind, featuring a private bathroom with a shower (bathtub available based on availability), laughing gas, oxygen, electronic fetal monitoring, and Panda warmers. Based on your birth preferences, we engage in informed discussions at key decision points to ensure your choices are supported, including the option for epidural analgesia upon request. In the event your labor becomes high-risk, 24/7 emergency care is available, and our obstetricians are ready to provide additional support. Our primary goal is to ensure a safe and healthy experience for both mom and baby.

After delivery, newborns typically room in with their mother on the postpartum unit, and partners are welcome to stay overnight. Visitors are encouraged! A typical stay is 24 hours after a vaginal delivery and 48 hours after a cesarean birth, though early discharge may be possible with your doctor’s approval and the support of our midwifery team. Our postpartum unit is staffed by registered nurses specializing in infant care, lactation consultants, nurse practitioners, and pediatricians as needed. We also provide virtual translation services for families who require them.

Our hospital supports breastfeeding, offers formula supplements when necessary, and provides the option to purchase human donor milk from Northern Star Mother's Milk Bank. Postpartum care includes screenings for hyperbilirubinemia, metabolic disorders, and hearing, ensuring your baby receives the care they need. Foothills Medical Centre is also equipped with a Level 3 NICU for babies who require additional support.

We invite you to share your birth experience with us and look forward to supporting you every step of the way.
